The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” movie premiered on British television today in 1967. Produced entirely by the Beatles themselves, the reviews were scathing. Plans to release the film in US theaters were cancelled.  

Led Zeppelin played their first American concert in Denver, Colorado, today in 1968. They’d play four more cities in four days, getting their first night off on New Year’s Eve.  

And in 1966, after a show at the Uppercut Club in London, Jimi Hendrix took some time backstage to write the lyrics to “Purple Haze.”
