Today in Rock History with Chris DeCarlo

June 27 |

On this day in 1970, the UK band Smile debuted their new singer: Freddie Mercury. The gig was booked before they decided to change their name to Queen.

On this day in 1989, the Who performed their rock opera, “Tommy” live at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. They hadn’t done the whole thing in concert for 19 years.

Tragically, in 2002, Who bassist John Entwistle died in Las Vegas, Nevada, at age 57, the day before the start of their next tour.
