The biggest rock benefit in history took place on this day in 1985: Live Aid – an intercontinental concert organized to raise money to help fight world hunger. The shows in London and Philadelphia were watched by an estimated 1.9 billion people worldwide.  

Today in 1968, after changing their name from “Earth,” “Black Sabbath” played their first gig at a small blues club in Birmingham, England.  

And Happy Birthday to Roger McGuinn, founding guitarist and vocalist of The Byrds. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer turns 80 today.
