October 20
A bittersweet birthday greeting to the late Tom Petty. The Heartbreakers leader and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer would have been 70 today.
Rock music suffered a great loss on this day in 1977 when a plane crash in Mississippi took the lives of Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, singer Cassie Gaines, and several others.
Today in 1978, The Police made their U.S. debut at C.B.G.B.’s in New York. The band had flown from England on the ‘no-frills’ Laker Airways, with their instruments as carry-ons.
