On this day in 1963, a Washington, D.C., DJ named James Carroll played The Beatles on US radio for the first time. His girlfriend had brought him a copy of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” from England. Listener reaction convinced Capitol Records to release it two weeks ahead of schedule.  

In 1982 the Who played what was billed as their final performance ever at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. They’d reunite for Live Aid in 1985, and have been touring fairly steadily since 1989.  

And happy birthday today to Bad Company and Free vocalist Paul Rodgers, who turns 72
