On this day in 1966, The Doors signed a seven album deal with Elektra Records. To get it done, they agreed to edit their first single, “Break on Through,” cutting “She gets high” to just “She gets” to help it get radio airplay.
In 1969 Janis Joplin was arrested in Tampa, Florida, for using “vulgar and indecent language” on stage. Allegedly, she threatened to kick a policeman in the face, among other things.
And in 1966, Jefferson Airplane were in the studio recording their classic “Somebody to Love.” Writer Grace Slick had already done a version with her last band, The Great Society.
