On this day in in 1989, over 200,000 people attended a free Pink Floyd show in Venice, Italy–more than twice what the authorities planned for. It was also broadcast live to over 20 countries.
In 1973, the Kinks’ Ray Davies announced that he was retiring from rock and roll during a show in London. However, it didn’t last long—he rejoined the band less than a week later.
And today in 1958, John Lennon’s mother Julia was struck by a car and killed. John was 17, and would later write about her loss in “Mother,” The Beatles’ “Julia” and other songs.
