On this day in 1973, Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band” hit #1 on the singles chart. That was a nice birthday present for Mark Farner, guitarist and vocalist for Grand Funk – he’s 72 today.

In 1963 the Rolling Stones began their first tour of England, along with the Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, and Little Richard.

In 1980 John Lennon ended a five year hiatus from the media, when he agreed to be interviewed by “Newsweek” magazine. The article was done to promote his and Yoko’s upcoming album “Double Fantasy.”
