June 17 |
On June 17, 1965, two British bands made their US debut in the same venue. The Kinks and The Moody Blues were on the bill together at the New York Academy of Music.
In 1966, Paul McCartney bought the farm in Kintyre, Scotland that would later inspire the song “Mull of Kintyre.” Though not a hit in the US, the song was a smash everywhere else, and the first single to sell over 2 million copies in the UK.
And Led Zeppelin began a three-week tour of Europe on this day in 1980. It would be their last. A planned US tour was cancelled after John Bonham’s sudden death the following September.
