On this day in 1967, the first of the major rock festivals started: Monterey Pop Festival. 50,000 fans were there to see breakthrough performances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, and many more over the three day event.
In 1970, the organizers of the Woodstock festival report they’d lost over 1.2 million dollars on the event. They’d later make the money up (and then some) from the film and soundtrack albums.
On this day in 1982 Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman Scott died in his sleep due to a drug overdose. He was 25.
