One of America’s most important record labels, Capitol Records, was formed on this day in 1942. They were the first label to send radio stations free copies of their releases. Back then, most labels felt that radio was the competition.  

In 1966, Janis Joplin arrived in San Francisco for the second time, invited there by the band Big Brother and the Holding Company to be their lead singer.  

And Ronnie Lane, bass player for the Faces, died on this day in 1997 of complications from multiple sclerosis. He was 51 years old.
