On this day in 1970, Ray Davies of The Kinks made a 6,000 mile round trip from New York to London to record one word. He had to change “Coca-cola” to “Cherry-cola” on the single version of “Lola.” Otherwise, it wouldn’t get played in Britain because the BBC wouldn’t allow advertising of any kind.
In 1972, Jethro Tull had the top album in America, with “Thick as aBrick,” the fifth LP from Ian Anderson and the band.
And today in 1967, the Doors’ released their single version of “Light My Fire.” It would go on to spend three weeks at #1.
