On this day in 1967, Jimi Hendrix signed his first major American record deal. It was with Reprise Records, a label owned in part by Frank Sinatra.  

Two movies premiered on this day in rock. In 1970 the Beatles’ “Let It Be” opened in the U.K., a week after it’s US debut, and in 1978 “The Buddy Holly Story” premiered in Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas.  

And one of the most powerful voices in rock, the late Joe Cocker, was born today in 1944.
