On this day in 1981 Paul McCartney became a solo artist again, when he announced the end of Wings. The decision came after guitarist Denny Laine, the last of the original Wings line-up, decided to leave the band.  

In 1979, The Police made their debut on BBC TV’s Top of the Pops, performing “Roxanne.”  

And today in 1990, the Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix used at Woodstock, including his version of the “Star Spangled Banner,” was auctioned off in London for $295,000.
