On this day in 1970, Santana began recording their breakthrough album, Abraxas, in San Francisco. It would come out the following September, and go to #1 on the charts.
“The Band” appeared in concert for the first time on this day in 1969. Though they’d spent years as ‘The Hawks’ behind Ronnie Hawkins, and recorded extensively with Bob Dylan, it was the first time they were billed as “The Band.”
And the first solo album from Paul McCartney was released on this day 1970, called “McCartney.” It was a true ‘solo’ record—Paul played and sang everything but a few background vocals from wife Linda.
