The first 45 RPM record was introduced on this day in 1945.  It took RCA Victor 9 years of research and development.  It was designed to compete with Long Playing records, or LP’s, which Columbia had introduced the year before.

In 1967 Jimi Hendrix began a major British tour in London at The Astoria.  It was the first time he ever set fire to his guitar, something he’d become famous for at the Monterey Pop festival a few months later.

And birthday greetings go out today to a pair of guitar legends: Mick Ralphs of Bad Company who’s 77, and Angus Young of AC/DC, who celebrates turning 66.
