One of the pioneers of rock and roll, Bill Haley died of a heart attack on this day in 1981 at age 55. Haley and his band The Comets recorded “Rock Around the Clock,” an anthem for the first generation of rock fans.  

In 1972, Paul McCartney & Wings played their very first concert, showing up unannounced to play at Nottingham College in England. Exactly eight years earlier in 1964, The Beatles played the Ed Sullivan Show with seventy-three million Americans watching.  

And Genesis played their first concert as a headliner on this day in 1973.
