Today in Rock History with Chris DeCarlo

February 3

It was the day the music died.  Today in 1959, rock and roll legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash just outside Mason City, Iowa in a snowstorm. Holly was only 22 and Ritchie Valens was just 17.

Today in 1968, The Beatles started work on their new single at Abbey Road Studios. Three piano and drum takes later, along with overdubbed bass, fuzz guitar, and vocals, “Lady Madonna” was mostly finished.

And Happy Birthday to guitarist Dave Davies of the Kinks, Ray’s younger brother in the band, who turns 74.
