Today in Rock History with Chris DeCarlo

January 24

On this day in 1962 British record store owner Brian Epstein inked a deal to be the manager of The Beatles. Unlike the standard ten percent for management, Epstein’s contract gave him 25% of the band’s earnings.

The Clash released their first American single on this day in 1979 “I Fought The Law,” a cover of the old Bobby Fuller Four song. It didn’t make much of an impression on the charts. For that, they’d have to wait until 1982 with “Rock The Casbah.”

And Jethro Tull played their first American concert on this day in 1969, at the Fillmore East in New York City.
