Brunswick Records released the Who’s first single on this day in 1965, “I Can’t Explain.” Only 1,000 copies were pressed since the label didn’t expect much. But when it reached #8 on the charts, they quickly pressed 100,000 more.
The Rolling Stones were on the Ed Sullivan Show on this day in 1967. Ed thought the lyrics to “Let’s Spend the Night Together” were too suggestive for family audiences, so Mick sang “Let’s Spend Some Time Together” instead.
And today is the birth anniversary of the late Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant, born on this day in 1949.
