Today in Rock History with Chris DeCarlo

January 11

The first “Rock in Rio” started today in 1985 in Rio di Janeiro. The 10-day long festival featured scores of artists, including Queen, Rod Stewart, Yes, Ozzy Osbourne and AC/DC. Almost 1 point 5 million people attended overall.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience spent this day in a London studio in 1967, recording one of the songs that would change rock guitar: Purple Haze.

And in 1973, the Rolling Stones announced their five-night stand at Budokan Arena in Tokyo had been cancelled. Mick Jagger’s visa was refused because of a drug arrest four years earlier. They wouldn’t play Japan until 1990.
