In 1968, the three-day Miami Pop Festival began, featuring Steppenwolf, Procol Harum, Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, the Turtles and The Grateful Dead among others. Tickets went for as high as seven dollars for the 100,000 attendees.
In 1971, George Harrison became the first former Beatle to have a #1 single. His “My Sweet Lord,” originally intended for Billy Preston, hit the top of the US charts.
And Happy Birthday to keyboardist and bandleader Edgar Winter, who turns 74 today.
