Today in Rock History with Chris DeCarlo

December 6

Today in 1969 was one of the darkest days in rock history. The Rolling Stones sponsored and headlined a free rock concert at California’s Altamont raceway. By the day’s end, dozens of fans were beaten, and four died, one of them murdered within view of the stage. The Stones’ movie “Gimme Shelter,” which opened on this day in 1970, caught the tragedy on film.

On a lighter note, Led Zeppelin made their debut on the US singles chart in 1969 with “Whole Lotta Love.” It would peak at #4, the first of 6 top 40 singles for the band in the U.S. They never released any singles in the UK during their career.
