OCALA, FL (352today.com) – While most students look to fly commercial to their vacation spot this summer, one Ocala high school student will be flying high with the Navy.
Joseph Lavdas, a student from Vanguard High School in Ocala, was recently granted the honor of completing an intensive summer program with the United States Navy.
The U.S. Navy Summer Flight Academy aviation program is an eight-week endeavor which takes place at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, NC.
The program stands as a new STEM initiative that was selected for funding by the Navy. The program was established in 2021 by the Commander, Naval Air Forces (CNAF) to increase exposure to Naval Aviation. It is set to begin June 1.
The cost of the program is approximately $28,000/student but is offered at no cost to the student and with no obligations.
“The goal of the scholarship program is to inspire and expose exceptional young talent from communities across the nation to a career path in Naval Aviation,” says Tamara Graham, Deputy Director, CNAF Flight Academy Program Manager. “Joseph Lavdas has demonstrated incredible potential, and the Navy is honored to play a part in his personal and professional journey.”
During the eight weeks, Lavdas will have some stellar aviation opportunities, including more than 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or Piper Warrior (PA-28). Lavdas will be required to complete 17 hours of solo flights for completion. He will receive a minimum of 32 hours of classroom aviation academics.
Upon completion of the program, Lavdas will earn a private pilot certification and five college credits.
