SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Improvements may be on the way for the busy intersection of County Road 466 and U.S. Highway 301, and Sumter County officials want your input.
A public meeting held July 30 introduced proposed plans to widen both roadways to help manage growing traffic and improve safety in the years ahead.
Why Changes Are Needed
The intersection currently struggles with long lines and turn delays, especially during peak hours. A recent traffic study revealed:
- An extra westbound left-turn lane is needed on C 466.
- Current turn lanes don’t meet today’s size standards.
- Without improvements, traffic congestion will worsen as the area grows.
To meet traffic demands through 2045, engineers recommend adding travel lanes and improving turn lanes in both directions.
Proposed Widening Options
For C 466, three potential plans are being considered:
- Alternative 1: Widen both north and south sides.
- Alternative 2: Widen only the north side.
- Alternative 3: Widen only the south side.
For US 301, one option is on the table:
- Widen both east and west sides – this would be paired with any of the C 466 options.
Improvements would include an extra through lane on each road and a dedicated “free-flow” right-turn lane from US 301 to eastbound C 466.
What’s Next
Residents and drivers are encouraged to weigh in on the proposed changes.
- Feedback forms were available at the meeting.
- Comments will be reviewed and shared with the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).
- The BOCC will decide which option, if any, moves forward.
Funding and construction timelines will be addressed after a preferred plan is selected.
