The Marion County Board of County Commissioners officially proclaimed June 27 as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness/Teal Out Day, reaffirming its commitment to supporting individuals impacted by PTSD and encouraging communitywide awareness and action.

PTSD affects approximately eight million adults across the United States each year and can result from traumatic events such as combat, abuse, assault, violence, and the intense responsibilities faced by first responders. The proclamation highlights the importance of open dialogue in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and in encouraging those affected to seek help and support.

“This proclamation is a reminder that invisible wounds deserve just as much care and compassion as visible ones,” said Chairman Kathy Bryant, “We want every citizen living with PTSD to know they are not alone and that their community stands beside them.”

This proclamation also emphasizes that greater awareness leads to greater understanding—not only of PTSD but of other trauma-related mental health issues as well. Special recognition is given to those who have experienced PTSD as a result of serving and protecting others, such as military personnel, law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency responders.

To show solidarity, the entire Marion County Community is encouraged to wear teal on June 27 and to participate in the annual PTSD Awareness Walk at 6:30 p.m. at the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park. This community event is a visible display of support and a step toward breaking the silence that often surrounds PTSD.

Commemorative T-shirts are available for $25 and can be purchased online at VHVUSA.org/PTSD. Proceeds from t-shirt sales benefit Veterans Helping Veterans USA, the Marion County Fire Rescue Peer Support Fund, and H3 Adventures. These local organizations are dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of our community’s veterans and first responders.

This year’s shirt is a gray, breathable dry-fit material, ideal for Florida’s summer heat. The front features a teal-accented design, while the back showcases the American flag beneath the powerful message: “TOGETHER WE FIGHT.”

Whether you walk, run, wear teal, or simply spread the word, your support helps send a powerful message: “You are not alone.”

Together, Marion County is taking meaningful action to promote healing, foster community, and eliminate stigma—one conversation and one step at a time.
