OCALA FL. (352 Today) Marion County’s hometown airport is getting a major upgrade, thanks to a federal grant that covers nearly all the costs of important safety and infrastructure projects.

At its Sept. 16 meeting, the Marion County Board of County Commissioners approved a $5.29 million Airport Improvement Program grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The award will pay for 95% of construction costs for key improvements at the Marion County Airport at Dunnellon Field, including:

  • Rebuilding the airport’s rotating beacon
  • Replacing airport lighting vault equipment
  • Building 3,300 feet of Taxiway B
  • Installing new Taxiway B lighting

The Florida Department of Transportation is expected to contribute another 4% of the total project cost through a separate grant agreement. Marion County will provide the final 1% as the local match.

“We are truly excited to continue receiving generous support from the Federal Aviation Administration to increase the operational safety and efficiency at X35,” stated Parks & Recreation Director Jim Couillard. “Taxiway Bravo, the new beacon tower, and lighting systems will follow the construction of Taxiway Alpha, which begins this fall. Once completed, these projects will allow for endless opportunities for investment and development within the infield area of the airport.”

The improvements were approved following a project application submitted to the FAA earlier this summer. Once complete, they will enhance safety, modernize the airport’s infrastructure, and strengthen Marion County’s role in supporting both general aviation and economic development.

The Marion County Airport at Dunnellon Field is a vital community asset, supporting aviation, business, and emergency services while serving as a gateway to the county’s growing economy.
