OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Florida drivers saw a sharp increase in gas prices last week as tensions escalated in the Middle East, according to AAA – The Auto Club Group. The state average surged by 20 cents per gallon before falling slightly over the weekend, landing at $3.11 per gallon on Sunday. That follows a midweek dip to $2.95, the lowest average since May 10, and a quick climb to $3.15 by Thursday, the highest since May 2.
Concerns over oil supply disruptions contributed to the price volatility. U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and subsequent threats from Iran, including a possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, spurred early-week oil market reactions. The Iranian Parliament voted to shut the strategic waterway, which handles roughly 20% of global oil shipments, but the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council.
Crude oil prices responded with moderate gains, reaching $74.93 per barrel on Friday, up $2 from the previous week. Overnight trading over the weekend saw fluctuations between $74 and $77 per barrel. In contrast, May’s average was $60 per barrel.
“Drivers in the U.S. could see higher prices at the pump if tensions persist or if oil flows are disrupted,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “So far, the impact has been measured, but market watchers are keeping a close eye on how things unfold in the coming days.”
As of publication, the lowest reported gas price in Ocala was $2.93 per gallon at the Circle K located at 7580 SW State Road 200, according to GasBuddy.com.
