What happens in the moment when everything changes? That question is at the heart of Songs for a New World, the powerful contemporary musical coming to the stage at Buchholz High School, presented by the Buchholz Drama Department.
Written by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, known for Parade and The Bridges of Madison County, Songs for a New World is not a traditional musical with one continuous storyline. Instead, it brings together a collection of characters, songs and stories connected by a common theme: people reaching a turning point and deciding what to do next.
The show travels across centuries and circumstances—from the deck of a ship sailing toward an unknown world in 1492 to a New York City high-rise, from relationships at a crossroads, to people confronting their ambitions, fears and hopes for the future.
With a score that blends musical theatre with pop, gospel, jazz and contemporary influences, Songs for a New World gives the Buchholz cast an opportunity to showcase both powerful individual voices and the strength of the ensemble.
The show’s student director, Eden Hendricks, says: “This show has something for everyone. With songs from different genres that range through multiple emotions and a talented cast and crew, I know you will leave feeling inspired!”
“This musical has the unique challenge of portraying several different people at different stages of their life,” says cast member Luke Guin. “I love working with the cast and crew as we bring these characters and stories to life.”
Performances will be held September 24–25 at 7 p.m., September 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., October 1–2 at 7 p.m., and October 3 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Buchholz High School Auditorium. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door.
